MCAAD — American Dream Data Wall
The American Dream is often talked about, debated and challenged, but rarely seen through the lens of data.
The American Dream Data Wall is a large-scale data visualisation installation created for the Milken Center for Advancing the American Dream, housed within a newly opened museum exhibition space in Washington, DC. An expansive LED wall becomes the canvas for the experience, exploring how Americans themselves understand, experience and redefine the American Dream.
Drawing on nationally representative survey research developed in partnership with Gallup, alongside trusted public data sources, the installation brings together historical trends, contemporary attitudes and long-term shifts to tell the story of the American Dream through the data of Americans.
Statistical insight is deliberately placed alongside human perspective. Data visualisations sit in dialogue with quotes from historical and contemporary figures, as well as verbatim responses from the survey, creating a layered narrative that blends evidence with lived experience.
Carefully choreographed animation is layered with video to guide visitors through complex data stories, using motion and imagery to reveal structure, signal change and ground the data in lived reality. The scale of the installation means visitors encounter different narratives depending on where they stand, encouraging repeat viewing and rewarding movement through the space.
Rather than offering a single conclusion, the experience presents multiple viewpoints and evolving patterns, inviting visitors to reflect on progress made, tensions that remain and how the American Dream continues to change across generations.
